Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in North District Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for North District Hospital made the following announcement today (May 7):

     Five patients (aged 88 to 96) of a female medical ward have been confirmed to have Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since April 16. One of them is an infected case and the patient passed away on April 22. The remaining four patients were confirmed to be MDRA carriers without clinical symptoms. Among the four cases, two are still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation and are in a stable condition.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:

1. Enhance cleansing and disinfection of the ward concerned;
2. Apply stringent contact precautions, including dedicated use of clinical equipment for all patients in the ward concerned and enhance hand hygiene;
3. Perform contact tracing and screen new admission to the ward;
4. Enhance environmental samplings for monitoring;
5. Enhance attention to contamination-prone procedures; and
6. Visiting is limited to two people per patient during each visiting period.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
