The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (May 6) investigating a case of Legionnaires' disease (LD) involving a man aged 37.

The patient, with underlying diseases, lives in the Mainland. He has presented with fever, chills, shortness of breath, chest discomfort and lower limb swelling since April 30. He came to Hong Kong on May 2 and was admitted to North District Hospital on the same day. He was then transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for further management on May 4 and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on May 5.

His clinical diagnosis was pneumonia and he is currently in a critical condition.

His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen upon testing by QEH.

The patient's home contacts remain asymptomatic. Investigations are proceeding.

This is the 11th LD case reported to the CHP this year. In 2014 and 2013, 41 and 28 cases were recorded respectively.
