Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, after attending a radio programme today (May 6):

Reporter: Mr Wong, there is a study by HKUST and Civic Exchange that air pollution was much higher than WHO standards. Is the Government looking at beyond the end-of-pipe solutions of pedestrianisation to solve that problem?

Secretary for the Environment: In short, based on our Clean Air Plan launched earlier, the Environment Bureau is in collaboration with other concerned bureaux, including the Transport and Housing Bureau and the Development Bureau. While we are putting a lot of efforts on tail-end pollution cleaning-up, we do see the need to step up our effort to look at town planning and other related issues so that we can protect our public health better. In response to your earlier question, we are in line with the thinking of the NGOs (non-governmental organisations) or the research institutes in order to clean up our air and protect our public health, and we need multiple efforts at the same time. But certainly, the key is that the priority should be put on cleaning-up tail-end emissions from cars, ships and power plants. At the same time, we are stepping up our collaboration with the Guangdong Government. These are the priority areas we are working on.

Reporter: What about more air monitoring stations beyond just having them in Central and Causeway Bay areas?

Secretary for the Environment: Bascially we have enough numbers of air monitoring stations in Hong Kong. At the same time, we are exploring new means, for instance, in the recent Marathon event, we did have joint collaboration with universities and NGOs to explore mobile (air monitoring) stations. We are exploring different means.
