************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the first public lecture this year under the theme "Waste Treatment" on May 9 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Science Museum.

The RGC has invited the Professor of the Department of Biology at the Hong Kong Baptist University and Director of the Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment, Professor Jonathan Wong, and Professor of the Department of Chemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Jimmy Yu, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Science Museum
Language: Cantonese
Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Professor Wong will give a talk entitled "Food Waste Management - Waste to Resource", which will provide an overview of available technologies, their suitability to Hong Kong and other countries, benefits and key challenges of recycling food waste.

As air and water pollution become worse, the development of efficient and green purification and disinfection technologies are increasingly critical. Professor Yu will deliver a lecture entitled "Photocatalytic Technology for Pollution Treatment" to introduce how photocatalytic materials can absorb harmful ultraviolet radiation, degrade pollutants, and kill bacteria on contact.

Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited by the RGC to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim at arousing public interest in local research development.
