**************************

The Civil Aid Service (CAS) today (May 3) concluded a two-day exercise codenamed "Exercise Gazelle". The exercise, which is held biennially, aimed to test and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of CAS members regarding command, control, communication and logistic support under various scenarios simulating Hong Kong being affected by natural disasters such as tropical cyclones, or outbreaks of unknown communicable diseases and avian flu.

Some 1,000 CAS officers and members from the operations, administration and support units took part in the exercise at eight locations on Hong Kong Island and in the New Territories.

"The Exercise was held successfully. We effectively evaluated our members' rescue skills and their ability to respond to emergency through simulating different scenarios, including tree clearance and manning of quarantine centre," the CAS Administration Force Commander, Mr Wong Chun-kong, said.
