The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (May 2) expressed his gratitude for the safe return of Hong Kong residents who had sought assistance after the earthquake in Nepal. He was grateful to the officers of the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the Immigration Department for their efforts in helping Hong Kong residents.

Since the earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, the Immigration Department has received request for assistance from a total of 43 Hong Kong residents. The Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the Immigration Department managed to get in touch with 42 of them but learnt that a Nepalese Hong Kong resident was unfortunately killed.

The Chief Executive was relieved and pleased to know that the remaining 10 residents, who had wished to leave Nepal as soon as possible, returned safely to Hong Kong today.

"The earthquake in Nepal has caused heavy casualties and severe economic loss. I express my condolence at the passing of a Hong Kong resident and my deepest sympathies to the people and government of Nepal. The Hong Kong SAR Government will provide relief and financial assistance and I appeal to the Hong Kong community to offer care and support so as to help Nepal overcome the difficulties as soon as possible," the Chief Executive said.
