CFS finds milk fat of a batch of milk below legal requirement
**************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Department today (April 29) announced that a sample of milk, imported from Australia, was found with milk fat below the legal requirement. The CFS is following up on the case.

Details of the product are as follows:

Product name: Trappist Dairy Pure Milk (U.H.T. or ULTRA HEAT TREATED)
Country of origin: Australia
Importer: Trappist Dairy Limited
Manufacturer: Pactum Dairy Group
Best before date: November 26, 2015
Volume: One litre

"The CFS collected the sample for testing at the import level. Test result showed that it contained milk fat at a level of 3.09 per cent, below the legal requirement of not less than 3.25 per cent and in contravention of the Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) Regulations," a CFS spokesman said.

The spokesman said that the affected batch of the product has been marked and sealed, and has not entered the local market. Other batches of the same product available in the market will not be affected. Although consuming milk with milk fat below the legal requirement would not pose any health concern, the sample did not meet the legal definition as stated in the composition of milk nor the legitimate expectation of its consumers. In view of this, the Centre has temporarily suspended the permission to import for sale of the product granted earlier to the importer. The Centre has also requested the relevant authorities to provide a detailed investigation report and adopt remedial measures as appropriate to ensure their products are in compliance with the legal requirements of Hong Kong.

The CFS has informed the Australian authorities of the test result to facilitate investigation and rectification by their side. The CFS will continue to follow up on the incident.
