Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital made the following announcement today (April 21):

     Eight male patients (aged 69 to 94) of an orthopaedic ward were found to have Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) isolated from their specimens from April 2 to 16, all without clinical symptoms. Among the eight cases, four patients are still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition. One patient has been discharged. The remaining three patients have been transferred to Tai Po Hospital and are being treated under isolation in stable condition.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:

1. Enhanced disinfection and cleaning of the ward concerned;
2. Application of stringent contact precautions, including use of dedicated clinical equipment for MDRA carriers and enhanced hand hygiene; and
3. Enhanced attention to contamination-prone procedures.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
