Hong Kong Museum of History exhibition reveals stories behind artefacts
*******************************************************

Collections of artefacts are the souls of museums, and most events or activities held by museums are centred on their artefacts. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Museum of History. To commemorate the occasion, an exhibition entitled "Every Object Tells a Story" is being staged today (April 15) until May 6 to tell the stories behind the museum's artefacts.

The exhibition is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and organised by the Hong Kong Museum of History. Featuring 40 sets of artefacts, the exhibition reveals not only the stories behind the artefacts but also the methods used to build a collection, so as to give visitors greater insight into the museum's work. The exhibition also aims to encourage the public to donate more of their own historic items to the museum in support of the upcoming comprehensive revamp of "The Hong Kong Story", the museum's permanent exhibition.

Hong Kong City Hall, which is managed by the Government, opened its doors to the public in 1962 and became home to the City Museum and Art Gallery. This marked the beginning of today's public museums in Hong Kong. When the Hong Kong Museum of History split off from the original museum in 1975, it inherited some items that reflected Hong Kong's history including old photos, postal items, banknotes and coins as well as items related to folk customs. Based on this legacy, other collection categories - local history, natural history, military and customs - were developed for the museum's exhibition, research, publishing and educational activities. Through acquisitions and donations, the museum has built up a comprehensive collection that now numbers over 110,000 historical objects and old photos. This collection represents a treasure trove of invaluable information for research into local history.
