The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) announced today (April 13) that its mobile collection vehicle will be stationed outside Tai Po Civic Centre, On Pong Road, Tai Po (near the entrance to the car park) from April 14 to 26, between 11.30am and 7pm to collect blood from members of the public. (The mobile collection vehicle will be closed on Monday, April 20.) Not only will blood donors receive souvenirs, they will also be given a commemorative certificate, which is presented for the first time by BTS to donors giving blood in the mobile vehicle.

Currently, 1 100 blood donors need to come forward daily for BTS to cope with the demand from patients and stabilise its blood inventories. Eligible donors are asked to give blood at least twice yearly to help BTS meet the demand at any given time.

Anyone who is aged between 16 and 60 (donation is possible up to the age of 70 if predetermined conditions are met), weighs over 41kg and is in good health is eligible to give blood. Male and female adult donors aged 18 or above can donate every 75 days and every 105 days respectively. Youths aged between 16 and 17 can donate every 150 days. For the locations and service hours of donor centres, please call the BTS hotline at 2710 1234 or visit its website at www.ha.org.hk/rcbts.
