PSC Chairman inspects passing-out parade at HK Police College (with photos)

Hong Kong's hard-earned reputation as one of the world's safest cities owed much to the intensively-trained, highly-competent and well-disciplined Police Force, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC), Mrs Rita Lau, said today (April 11) when inspecting a passing-out parade of the Hong Kong Police College.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Lau cited a Mencius quote, "before Heaven entrusts a man with a great responsibility, it shall first frustrate his spirit and will, exhaust his body and flesh, and expose him to hunger and poverty". She noted that a police career was in no way an easy ride and efforts might not always win praise amidst calls on the Force to tackle immeasurable kinds of difficult and complicated situations.

She encouraged the graduates to be patient, remain calm and put the professional knowledge they had acquired from the training to good use.

"Perhaps you will get agitated or anxious at times in the early days of your service. Just stay vigilant and be thoughtful in making judgement. With guidance from your supervisors, mutual assistance amongst colleagues, and support from your family and friends, you will be able to rise up to the challenges", she added.

In her concluding remarks, she hoped the graduates would uphold the rule of law with resolution and impartiality, honouring the Police's Force motto of "We serve with pride and care".

A total of 38 probationary inspectors and 195 recruit constables passed out today.
