Additional matinee performance by Yu Qiwei Cantonese Music Ensemble to be staged

     An additional matinee performance by the Yu Qiwei Cantonese Music Ensemble will be staged at 3.30pm on April 25 (Saturday) at the Theatre, Yau Ma Tei Theatre due to overwhelming demand, while tickets for its other performances are already sold out. The performances are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department as one of the attractions of the "Guangdong Music Series".

     Yu Qiwei is a famous huqin virtuoso of National Class One Musician standing. In the coming Hong Kong performances, Yu will collaborate with other ensemble members including Wu Guozhong (dizi/xiao), Pan Weiwen (yangqin), Wen Chuanying (yehu/zhutiqin/gaohu) and Lin Danhong (qinqin/xiaosanxian/zhongruan). The programme includes the five-piece combo "Rain Lashing on the Plantain", the hard-and-soft-bow ensemble piece "A Medley of Guangdong Folk Tunes", the yangqin and yehu ensemble piece "The Lament of Lady Zhaojun", the gaohu solo "Birds Returning to the Woods", the yangqin solo "Fleeting Clouds" and more.

     Founded in 1975, the Yu Qiwei Cantonese Music Ensemble is a small chamber orchestra led by Yu Qiwei. It is adept in interpreting a wide range of works that span the traditional, the innovative and the edgy, thus establishing a form of Guangdong music that blends folk colours with a more lettered style.

     The ensemble has performed in various music events at home and abroad, including the Hong Kong International Youth Arts Festival, China Art Festival, Zhuhai International Art Festival and Singapore International Festival of Arts and more. The ensemble has also given demonstration performances at the China Conservatory, Central Conservatory of Music, and the Conservatories of Music in Shanghai, Sichuan, Xi'an, Wuhan and Tianjin. As a cultural delegate of China, the ensemble has performed and given lectures in Europe, the United States, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The Ensemble has a discography of dozens of CD releases under record labels on the Mainland, in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

     Tickets for the additional performance priced at $150 and $220 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
