Senior Counsel appointed

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma Tao-li is pleased to announce today (March 31) the appointment of 10 Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They are:

Mr Nigel Kat
Mr Martin Hui Siu-ting
Mr Hectar Pun Hei
Mr David Leung Cheuk-yin
Mr Jeremy Bartlett
Mr Douglas Lam Tak-yip
Mr Victor Dawes
Mr William Tam Yiu-ho
Mr Bernard Man
Mr Wayne Walsh

     The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

     The appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment, which will be executed on May 2, 2015, when the ceremonial proceedings will be held at 10am in Court No. 7 in the High Court.

     The biographical notes of the newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows:

Mr Nigel Kat

     Mr Nigel Kat, aged 60, obtained his Bachelor degree at Liverpool University. He completed his Bar Finals in 1977. He was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales (Middle Temple) in 1977, to the Bar of New York, and to the Hong Kong Bar in 1984. He has a mainly civil practice.

Mr Martin Hui Siu-ting

     Mr Martin Hui Siu-ting, aged 43, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Hong Kong. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1995. He is Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions at the Department of Justice.

Mr Hectar Pun Hei

     Mr Hectar Pun Hei, aged 43, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at the City University of Hong Kong. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1995. He has a mainly public law practice.

Mr David Leung Cheuk-yin

     Mr David Leung Cheuk-yin, aged 48, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Hong Kong. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1998. He is Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions at the Department of Justice.

Mr Jeremy Bartlett

     Mr Jeremy Bartlett, aged 56, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at Auckland University. He was admitted to the Bar of New Zealand in 1984 and the Bar of Victoria, Australia, in 1986. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1999. He has a civil practice.

Mr Douglas Lam Tak-yip

     Mr Douglas Lam Tak-yip, aged 42, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1999. He has a civil practice.

Mr Victor Dawes

     Mr Victor Dawes, aged 38, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1999. He has a mainly civil practice.

Mr William Tam Yiu-ho

     Mr William Tam Yiu-ho, aged 47, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at Monash University. He was admitted to the Bar of Victoria, Australia, in 1991. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 2000. He is Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions at the Department of Justice.

Mr Bernard Man

     Mr Bernard Man, aged 38, obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Civil Law degree at the University of Oxford. He was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales (Middle Temple), and to the Hong Kong Bar in 2000. He has a mainly civil practice.

Mr Wayne Walsh

     Mr Wayne Walsh, aged 57, obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at Otago University. He was admitted to the Bar of New Zealand in 1986, and to the Hong Kong Bar in 2006. He is Deputy Law Officer (Mutual Legal Assistance) at the Department of Justice.
