Statement by Former CE Mr Tung Chee Hwa on the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew
************************************************************

Former Chief Executive Mr Tung Chee Hwa tomorrow (March 29) will represent the Chief Executive and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to go to Singapore and attend the State Funeral Service of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore. He will return to Hong Kong on the same day.

Following is the statement by Mr Tung on the passing of Mr Lee:

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Mr Lee and I have known each other for decades. With his wisdom and forward-looking vision, great perseverance, strong leadership and care for people, he led the transformation of Singapore from a trading port into a prosperous country which people are proud of, playing a unique role in the international arena. He was a giant of our times. Hong Kong and Singapore share many similarities. Holding high regard for the relationship between Singapore and Hong Kong, Mr Lee hoped to enhance co-operation between the two places for mutual benefits.

Though we did not see each other very often, we talked at length on a wide range of topics whenever we met. I have learned much from his wisdom and unique insights.

Despite the passing of Mr Lee, his legacy and profound conviction in governance will persist. He will long be remembered. I am sure that his son Mr Lee Hsien Loong would uphold Mr Lee's spirit and lead Singapore to go from strength to strength on the path of stability and prosperity.
