The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

The 10-day Hong Kong Flower Show 2015 will come to a close tomorrow (March 29). Having participated in this event for years, the Housing Department (HD) this year added vibrant ambience to the show by decorating its garden plot with a "Waste Reduction Honey Bee" made up of various blossoms and flowers.

During the second half of last year, the HD launched a waste reduction campaign in all public housing estates and specially designed a logo featuring a Waste Reduction Honey Bee to highlight the theme. In order to disseminate the message of waste reduction at the flower show, the HD brought in the Waste Reduction Honey Bee and Slim Rubbish Bin mascots to interact with visitors, which were well-received.

"Waste reduction is a general trend now. Close to 30 per cent of the population, representing more than 700 000 households, live in public rental housing flats. If each household can make an effort, successful waste reduction will not be far from realisation," said the Assistant Director of Housing, Mr Leung Sai-chi.

The HD spares no effort in promoting waste reduction. The waste reduction campaign was held from July to December 2014 on all estates, during which encouraging drop of about 7.5 per cent on average was recorded compared to June 2014.

"We do not disseminate complicated messages to tenants but guide them towards waste reduction in daily life so that the idea will integrate into their way of living. We provide tips for waste reduction on various aspects: at home, when dinning and during shopping. Housewives, the elderly and the children can also make it," said Mr Leung.
