*********************************************************

The Basic Law was promulgated on April 4, 1990. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law, the Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee and the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau (CMAB) have organised a series of activities to promote the Basic Law to the community.

Riding on the opportunity of the annual Hong Kong Flower Show at Victoria Park, the CMAB has specially arranged a garden featuring "The 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law" at the Hong Kong Flower Show this year for public enjoyment. Awarded as the winning entry of the Special Award for Design Excellence (Landscape Display) (Local Displays Section), the garden shows a centrepiece of a verdant arch rising 3.5 metres high with a logo on "The 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law" made of flowers.

"The huge floral book underneath the arch signifies the Basic Law, which guarantees Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. Spanning from the floral book to the other side of the garden, the arch resembles a bridge linking Hong Kong to its promising future," the CMAB spokesperson said today (March 27).

In addition to the above-mentioned garden at the Hong Kong Flower Show, highlights of the activities also include the Seminar for the 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre at 10am on April 4. Guest speakers will include the Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung; the Dean of the School of Law of Tsinghua University, Professor Wang Zhenmin; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, Mr Fred Lam. Former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr Frederick Ma; the Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong, Professor Gabriel Leung; and Olympic silver medallists in table tennis (men's doubles) Li Ching and Ko Lai-chak will also join the seminar to have an exchange session with youths.

The "Exhibition of the 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law" will be held from April 4 to May 25 at the Hong Kong Museum of History. The exhibition will show in the form of a "time tunnel" the milestones of the past 25 years after the promulgation of the Basic Law. The exhibition, which will include valuable exhibits and photos as well as interactive games, will be open for free admission for all members of the public.

A set of commemorative stamps on the theme of "The 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law" with associated philatelic products will be released for sale by Hongkong Post on April 2. The set comprises four stamps with illustrations showing different aspects of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) upon the implementation of the Basic Law as well as the close ties between the HKSAR and the motherland. The souvenir sheet features a cartoon map of Hong Kong in the background, with the four stamps arranged in different parts of the map to illustrate that the Basic law has laid a solid foundation for the stability and prosperity of the HKSAR with safeguards for each and every aspect. Detailed information is available at Hongkong Post's website at www.hongkongpost.hk and via the Hongkong Post Mobile App.

The Information Services Department is partnering with a local tertiary institution to stage an exhibition designed by young people to promote the Basic Law in an interesting and interactive manner in the second quarter this year.

Other celebration activities include quiz competitions and thematic seminars as well as production of Announcements in the Public Interest, a documentary and commemorative publications.
