**********************************************************

A spokesman for the Civil Engineering and Development Department said today (March 27) that its contractor has found a large, still metal object on the seabed in the vicinity of the old Wan Chai Ferry Pier, which is within the project area of Wan Chai Development Phase II. The department has commenced further surveying and assessment.

"When conducting dredging works near the old Wan Chai Ferry Pier to prepare for reclamation of Wan Chai Development Phase II and tunnel works of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass, the contractor found a metal object 6 metres underneath the seabed. The dimension of the metal object is approximately 40m in length, 20m in width and 2m in height. According to the initial information gathered so far, there is a possibility that the object is part of a shipwreck. More details and the impact on related works are subject to further investigation and assessment," the spokesman said.

The construction works of Wan Chai Development Phase II commenced in 2009. The works aim to provide land at Wan Chai North and North Point for the construction of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass, the Island Eastern Corridor Link and waterfront promenade.
