*********************************************************

The Government today (March 27) announced the appointment of Ms Melissa Pang as the Chairman of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE) as well as the appointment of four new members and re-appointment of nine members for a two-year term starting from April 1, 2015.

A government spokesman said Ms Pang is a practicing solicitor and is currently the Vice-President of the Law Society of Hong Kong. She has a strong commitment to serving the community with her legal expertise and was nominated to represent the Law Society in the Legal Aid Services Council. Ms Pang is also a member of the Social Enterprise Advisory Committee and was the Chairperson of the District Fight Crime Committee (Eastern).

The spokesman said, "Ms Pang was first appointed to the CPCE in 2009 and has since been dedicated to the work of the Committee. She has been actively participating in various sub-committees and working groups under the CPCE to promote civic education. She has also frequently participated in various civic education activities organised by the CPCE."

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, thanked the outgoing Chairman, Dr Joseph Lee Chung-tak, for his valuable contributions to the work of the CPCE. Dr Lee has served first as a CPCE member from April 1997 to March 2000 and then as the CPCE's Chairman since April 2009.

Mr Tsang said, "Dr Lee has been devoting so much of his precious time and efforts to the work of the CPCE in the past years and achieved fruitful results during his tenure. Under Dr Lee's guidance, the Committee has strengthened its work on the promotion of core civic values and corporate citizenship. The Committee's enormous publicity on disseminating the messages of respect and inclusiveness has enhanced social harmony. It has also organised large-scale events to promote the Basic Law and established the Civic Ambassador Training Programme. Dr Lee himself actively takes part in the community's charitable work and shoulders the responsibilities of corporate citizenship. He also extensively develops community networks and enthusiastically nurtures the young generation. He has also provided invaluable advice to the Government on the formulation of strategies and plans for promoting these aspects of work."
