Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety

     Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (March 24). Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
 
     A total of 150 verbal warnings and 1 329 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from March 18 to March 24.
 
     During the period, Police issued 1 079 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 153 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 34 summonses for climbing over/through kerbside fence/central reservation on a carriageway.
 
     "Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely.  Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
