Food poisoning case related to wild mushrooms
*********************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (March 21) urged the public not to collect and eat wild mushrooms from parks or the countryside.

The call followed a report of suspected food poisoning involving a 29-year-old man, who had eaten wild mushrooms picked from the countryside in Ma On Shan.

Initial investigations by the CHP revealed that the patient developed vomiting and diarrhoea about 12 hours after eating the wild mushrooms on March 16. He developed jaundice on March 19. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) today and developed confusion later. He was subsequently admitted to PWH for acute liver and renal failure, and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of Queen Mary Hospital for further management this afternoon. He is now in serious condition.

     Investigation is ongoing.

A CHP spokesman advised people not to pick wild mushrooms for consumption as it is difficult to distinguish edible mushroom species from inedible ones.
