Appointments of Chairman and members of Commission on Youth

     The Government today (March 20) announced the appointment of Mr Lau Ming-wai as the Chairman of the Commission on Youth as well as the appointment of eight new members and re-appointment of 10 members for a two-year term starting from April 1, 2015.

     A government spokesman said that Mr Lau is currently the Chairman of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited who holds a doctorate degree of Philosophy in Law from King's College, University of London, United Kingdom. He is also a registered attorney in New York, the United States, and a chartered financial analyst. Mr Lau has always been dedicated to community service. He is a serving member of the Commission on Poverty and the Commission on Strategic Development, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Ocean Park Corporation, as well as a member of the Council of City University of Hong Kong.

     The spokesman said, "Mr Lau has been concerned about youth development. He took part in several research studies closely related to young people and attended a number of youth forums as a speaker to share and exchange views on various social issues with young people."

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, thanked the outgoing Chairman, Dr Bunny Chan Chung-bun, for his contributions to the work of the Commission. Dr Chan has been with the Commission since 2004 and served as the Chairman since April 2009.

     Mr Tsang said, "Dr Chan has made enormous achievements during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Commission proactively promotes youth development. It has been committed in co-ordinating summer youth progammes in different districts and expanded them into youth activities throughout the year. It also offers advice to the Youth Square to enhance moral education and training for young people. Moreover, it organises youth exchange sessions regularly as well as youth summits to facilitate a direct dialogue on topics of concern to youth between young people and government officials and chairmen of advisory bodies on different aspects, in order to strengthen communication."

     Mr Tsang also extended his gratitude to eight outgoing members, Mr George Lung Chee-ming, Mr Lam Cheung-chi, Mr Tang Kwong-shing, Mr Jaime Sze Wine-him, Ms Helen Lu Hai, Professor Nicole Cheung Wai-ting, Miss Gloria Au Hoi-yan and Mr Kwong Yu-tao, for their efforts in the work of the Commission.

     The official members of the Commission include representatives from the Home Affairs Bureau, the Education Bureau, the Labour and Welfare Bureau, the Security Bureau and the Home Affairs Department.

     The Commission on Youth is a non-statutory advisory body to advise the Government on matters pertaining to youth development. It commissions research studies on youth development matters and organises or sponsors youth development activities. It also sponsors youth exchange and internship programmes on the Mainland and runs the International Youth Exchange Programme for youngsters to engage in exchange activities overseas.
