New equipment requirements for refuse collection vehicles to come into effect on April 1
************************************************************

The new equipment requirements for refuse collection vehicles as stipulated in the Waste Disposal (Designated Waste Disposal Facility) (Amendment) Regulation 2013 will come into effect on April 1.

Starting from April 1, all refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) entering landfills or refuse transfer stations must be equipped with a metal tailgate cover and waste water sump tank of suitable construction and in good working condition. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $100,000.

Details of new equipment requirements for RCVs have been uploaded to the Environmental Protection Department's (EPD) website at www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/waste/prob_solutions/rcv_equip_requirement.html.¡@

To help the waste collection trade meet the new requirements, the EPD launched a one-off subsidy scheme in January last year for private RCV owners to install a metal tailgate cover and a waste water sump tank on their vehicles. A total of 330 applications from eligible private RCVs was received under the scheme, and the associated retrofitting works were completed in mid-March this year.

For further information about the new equipment requirements for RCVs, please call the EPD at 2872 1780.
