******************************************

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (March 13) visited Google Hong Kong to learn more about the company's operation and development in Hong Kong.

During a meeting with the company's senior executives, he exchanged views on issues relating to digital economies such as e-commerce and digital marketing. He was also briefed on Google Hong Kong's various forms of support for local start-ups and aspiring entrepreneurs, such as the Empowering Young Entrepreneurs Program, which attracted more than 900 young entrepreneur applicants last year. Six outstanding start-ups were also selected to visit Silicon Valley last October.

Mr So also toured Google's unique staff workspace, which is known for its open and fun environment.

Mr So said the Government had been proactively fostering the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong and promoting Hong Kong as a premier start-up destination in Asia.

"We support enterprises and start-ups with different funding schemes, and provide financial assistance for universities, research institutions and industries to commercialise research and development results," he said.

Mr So said he was delighted to see more and more private collaborative initiatives encouraging entrepreneurship in recent years, and hoped that these companies would continue with their endeavours to build up a more vibrant start-up ecosystem in Hong Kong.
