LegCo delegation concludes parliamentary visit in Germany

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The delegation of the Legislative Council (LegCo) concluded its parliamentary visit in Germany yesterday (March 6) and returned to Hong Kong today (March 7).

     On the last day of its visit, the delegation visited the Bremen Statistical Office to meet with the Returning Officer of Bremen, Mr Jˆ¢rgen Wayand.  Drawing on the elections of the Bremen Parliament planned for this May, Mr Wayand explained the electoral system of Germany to delegation members.

     Before departure for Hong Kong, Leader and Deputy Leader of the delegation, Ms Emily Lau and Mr Tommy Cheung, concluded that the visit was very fruitful in enhancing their understanding of the parliamentary affairs of Germany.  Members of the delegation also gained an insight of the political and electoral system of Germany.

     Ms Lau and Mr Cheung also expressed gratitude to the German Government for inviting LegCo Members to visit the Federal Parliament of Germany.  They were thankful for the excellent arrangements and warm hospitality the delegation received during its stay in Germany.

     During the six-day parliamentary visit in Berlin and Bremen, the delegation visited the German Bundestag and Bundesrat, Lower and Upper House of the German Parliament respectively, and various government authorities for the purpose of establishing and reinforcing link with the German legislature while keeping the German legislature as well as community and business leaders of Germany abreast of the latest developments in Hong Kong, and sustaining their interest in Hong Kong affairs.
