Appointment of HKUST Council Chairman
*************************************

The Government today (March 6) announced that the Chief Executive has appointed Mr Andrew Liao as Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) for a term of three years with immediate effect to March 5, 2018.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, welcomed Mr Liao's appointment.

"Mr Liao is devoted to public service. He has twice served as a Non-official Member of the Executive Council for nearly 10 years in total and has held various important public service appointments. He has made exemplary contributions to the community and is widely recognised for his vision and distinguished leadership. Mr Liao is passionate about post-secondary education and I am confident that he will lead HKUST to scale new heights," Mr Ng said.

Mr Ng also took the opportunity to again pay tribute to the late Dr Marvin Cheung, the immediate past Chairman of the HKUST Council.

"Under Dr Cheung's sterling leadership, the HKUST consolidated its position as one of the world's top-tier universities and continued to pursue excellence in both teaching and research. The results of the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise recently published by the University Grants Committee show that HKUST is of world-leading standard or considered internationally excellent in many research areas, testifying to the achievements of the university. The passing of Dr Cheung was a great loss to HKUST and to the higher education sector as a whole," he said.

Additionally, Mr Ng expressed his gratitude to Mr Martin Tang, the Vice-Chairman of the HKUST Council. Mr Tang has been serving as Acting Chairman since the passing of Dr Cheung in September 2014.

"Mr Tang has served as Member and Vice-Chairman of the HKUST Council for many years, during which he has made major contributions. Over the past half year, Mr Tang has kindly led the HKUST Council as Acting Chairman, thereby ensuring the smooth operation and steady development of the university. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr Tang," Mr Ng said.
