Cantonese Opera Development Fund's New Cantonese Opera Play Scriptwriting Competition extends deadline
************************************************************

The New Cantonese Opera Play Scriptwriting Competition held by the Cantonese Opera Development Fund (CODF) is now inviting entries. The deadline for applications has been extended to May 29 (Friday) at 6pm. Interested parties are welcome to join the competition.

To further its support for the creation of new Cantonese opera plays and to nurture budding playwrights, the CODF under the purview of the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) is collaborating with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) in organising the competition. The premiere of the best script will be presented by the LCSD.

Holders of Hong Kong identity cards aged 18 or above are eligible to enter the competition as individuals or on a group basis. The competition is divided into a preliminary contest and a final contest. Entrants for the preliminary contest will need to submit an entry form, together with the name of the play, a synopsis, an introduction for each scene and the major roles and a brief description of each main character, as well as the scripts of the first and second scenes. The finalists will be required to complete their full scripts within three months for final assessment by the adjudicating panel.

The adjudicators of the competition include Law Hang-tong (Law Ka-ying), Seto Yok (Loong Koon-tin), Pun Kwai-mui (Ng May-ying), Wong Shui-kwan (Wong Chiu-kwan), Lau Kin-wing, Professor Lui Yu-hon, Ip Sai-hung and representatives of the HAB and the LCSD.

The awards of the competition include one for best script (the prize for the playwright(s) of the best script will be $80,000 in total) and three prizes at most for outstanding scripts (the prize for the playwright(s) of each outstanding script will be $50,000 in total). Other finalists whose scripts are considered by the adjudicators as satisfactory will receive $5,000 for each script.

Entrants are required to submit a completed entry form and other necessary documents in a sealed envelope on or before the above deadline to the HAB (13/F, West Wing, Central Government Offices, 2 Tim Mei Avenue, Tamar, Hong Kong). For those who may submit in person, please contact the Secretariat of the CODF at 3509 7086 to make prior arrangements. Entry guidelines and forms are now available at the foyers of the Ko Shan Theatre and the Ko Shan Theatre New Wing (77 Ko Shan Road, Hung Hom, Kowloon) as well as the foyer of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre (6 Waterloo Road, Kowloon). They can be downloaded from the HAB's website www.hab.gov.hk and the CODF's website www.coac-codf.org.hk. For enquiries, please call 3509 8084 or 3509 7086.
