Update on clusters of Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Influenza B cases in Siu Lam Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding earlier announcements on clusters of patients infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Influenza B in two male wards for severe intellectual disability, the spokesperson for Siu Lam Hospital gave the following update today (March 3):

     Regarding the cluster of patients infected with RSV in a male ward for severe intellectual disability, it is confirmed today that two more patients (aged 56 and 71) and a staff member in the ward had presented with respiratory symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. The patients concerned are being treated under isolation with stable condition.

     In addition, regarding a cluster of patients infected with Influenza B in another male ward for severe intellectual disability, it is confirmed today that two more patients (aged 44 and 56) in the ward had presented with respiratory symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. The patients concerned are being treated under isolation with stable condition.

     Admission to the two wards has been suspended and restricted visiting has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the wards are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
