The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

More than 70 appreciation certificates were presented to outstanding housing estates in recognition of their good performance in waste reduction at the Public Housing Waste Reduction Campaign Appreciation Ceremony held today (February 6).

Officiating at the Appreciation Ceremony, the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing (Housing), Mr Stanley Ying, said, "Reduction of municipal solid waste is a topical issue for Hong Kong residents. As the largest landlord in Hong Kong, managing all the public rental housing (PRH) estates which accommodate nearly one-third of the population, the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) is obliged to take the lead in promoting public housing tenants' awareness of waste reduction, recycling and reuse, through organisation of promotional and educational activities of different types."

To promote residents' awareness of waste recycling and waste reduction, the HA rolled out in mid-2014 an estate-wide Public Housing Waste Reduction Campaign with the theme of "Let's join hands to reduce waste in our estates". To highlight the theme, the HA created a lovely Waste Reduction Honey Bee Icon as a symbol for the campaign to arouse the attention of PRH tenants on waste reduction, recycling and reuse in daily life.

Apart from holding a series of educational and promotional activities, the HA also launched an estate waste reduction competition for the period from July to December 2014. Appreciation certificates were presented today at the ceremony to the best performing estates in the Waste Reduction Campaign. The six winning estates are Lam Tin Estate, Chak On Estate, Lei Muk Shue (II) Estate, High Prosperity Terrace, Tai Hing Estate and Hau Tak Estate.

Since the launch of the Waste Reduction Campaign last year, estate residents have actively engaged in waste reduction and recycling activities organised by respective estates. In executing daily routines, whether at home, when shopping or when dining, they have put waste reduction into action with a view to reducing waste and supporting the campaign.
