Compensation levels increased for work injuries and occupational diseases
****************************************************

The levels of compensation for employees injured at work or suffering from prescribed occupational diseases under the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (ECO) or their family members (in fatal cases), persons suffering from pneumoconiosis and/or mesothelioma or family members of persons who died of the disease(s), and persons suffering from occupational deafness will be increased on March 5 this year.

The Legislative Council today (February 4) passed three resolutions to increase the amounts of a total of 18 compensation items under the ECO, the Pneumoconiosis and Mesothelioma (Compensation) Ordinance (PMCO) and the Occupational Deafness (Compensation) Ordinance (ODCO) in accordance with the findings of a new round of review. The revised levels of compensation will take effect from March 5, 2015.

"According to the established mechanism, the levels of compensation under the ECO, the PMCO and the ODCO are reviewed every two years. Adjustments, if required, are generally made by reference to the changes in the wage and price levels and other relevant factors in the review period," a spokesman for the Labour Department said.

In accordance with the findings of the review for 2012 to 2013, the amounts of a total of 18 compensation items under the three ordinances will be increased, ranging from 5.73 per cent to 44.44 per cent. Details are in the Appendix.

The commencement of the new levels of compensation can enhance the protection for injured employees, sufferers of occupational diseases and family members of employees or persons who died of work injuries or occupational diseases.
