The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) is today (February 2) investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) affecting 20 children at a residential child care centre in Wan Chai, and hence appealed to the public and management of institutions to maintain personal and environmental hygiene against AGE.
The affected children, comprising six boys and 14 girls aged from 4 months to 2 years, have presented with fever, diarrhoea and vomiting since January 17. All of them sought medical attention. One was admitted to a hospital for treatment and has been discharged. They are all in stable condition.
Investigations are ongoing.
Officers of the CHP have conducted a site visit and provided advice to the staff of the centre on necessary preventive measures including proper and thorough disinfection, proper disposal of vomitus, and personal and environmental hygiene. The institution has been put under medical surveillance.
A spokesman for the CHP advised members of the public to take heed of the following preventive measures against AGE:
* Ensure proper personal hygiene;
* Wash hands thoroughly before handling food and eating, and after using the toilet;
* Wear gloves when disposing of vomitus or faecal matter, and wash hands afterwards;
* Clean and disinfect contaminated areas or items promptly and thoroughly with diluted household bleach (by adding one part of bleach containing 5.25 per cent sodium hypochlorite to 49 parts of water);
* Maintain good indoor ventilation;
* Pay attention to food hygiene;
* Use separate utensils to handle raw and cooked food;
* Avoid food that is not thoroughly cooked;
* Do not try to use salt, vinegar, wine and wasabi to kill bacteria as they are not effective;
* Drink boiled water; and
* Do not patronise unlicensed food premises and food stalls.
