*****************************************************

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (January 25) visited the polling station for the market town of Cheung Chau on the last election day of the 2015 Rural Representative Election (RRE).

The Cheung Chau and Peng Chau Kaifong Representative Election (KFRE) is the first statutory KFRE held in accordance with the newly amended Rural Representative Election Ordinance (Chapter 576). A new term, Rural Representative, covers both the Village Representative (VR) and Kaifong Representative (KFR).

Mr Tsang said, "The voting of RRE is being held for four consecutive weeks and I am glad that the total number of candidates and the total number of voters are higher than those of last election. I believe all the elected VRs and KFRs would serve their residents wholeheartedly and work closely with the government to foster further developments in their villages and market towns.

"I would also like to express gratitude to all supporting parties, especially the Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Mr Justice Barnabas Fung Wah, and members Mr Lawrence Lok Ying-kam, SC, Mr Arthur Luk Yee-shun, SC and Professor Fanny Cheung Mui-ching. They have monitored polling and counting of votes in the past month to ensure that the election is held in accordance with the law."
