*****************************************************

The Social Innovation Video Competition for Secondary Students jointly organised by the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund) of the Commission on Poverty and the Government Youth Portal (Youth.gov.hk) has completed successfully. The award presentation ceremony of the competition, which was the first of its kind, was held today (January 24) at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The competition was well received with 70 entries. The entries reflected the students' concern about a wide range of poverty issues, as well as their innovativeness in addressing those issues in different ways. The Champion prize and the Most "Social Innovative" Award were presented to Sir Ellis Kadoorie Secondary School (West Kowloon) with the winning entry "Social Animation". The video suggests creating an online platform for production of animation in an easy way, so that the underprivileged can also become professionals in this service and gain extra income. The champion team will be sponsored for a four-day social innovation exploration trip to Seoul in Korea to visit and film social innovation projects there. Other awards were also presented in the ceremony, including the Most Liked Awards, for which voting was conducted online. The First Prize of this award was presented to Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School with the winning entry "Deliver the Warmth". The video studies the good deeds of restaurant owner Ming, who helps the grass roots by selling food at an affordable price. His meaningful action leads to introspection by many.

The SIE Fund Task Force Chairperson, Professor Stephen Cheung, said in his welcome speech that he hoped the competition could arouse concern among the youth over the poverty issue and stimulate their innovative ideas for poverty relief. He also said that the response to the online voting, which had drawn more than 5,000 citizens picking their favourite videos in two weeks, was very encouraging.

Two members of the Judging Panel, Senior Executive Producer of the News and Information Services Division of TVB Ms Yuan Siu-ching and Programme Host of Commercial Radio Hong Kong and Founder and CEO of Solution-On-Wheels Mr Vincent Wong, shared their adjudication remarks in the ceremony. Cantopop singing group C AllStar performed live and presented awards.

With the theme of "Tackling Poverty Problems by Social Innovation", the competition was open to all secondary school students in Hong Kong representing a school or an organisation. Participants were encouraged to set out their ideas on ways to carry out poverty relief in a three-minute video.
