Cantonese Opera Development Fund launches New Cantonese Opera Play Scriptwriting Competition
********************************************************

The Cantonese Opera Development Fund (CODF) established by the Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporated is now collaborating with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) to further its support for the creation of new Cantonese opera plays. The CODF is holding the New Cantonese Opera Play Scriptwriting Competition and the LCSD will present the premiere of the best script.

The competition aims to encourage and nurture budding playwrights to create new Cantonese opera plays, and to improve the scripts through staging performances. The organisers hope that the competition will increase the number of quality scripts that are suitable for performances, as well as enhance the reputation of budding playwrights and encourage more people to participate in Cantonese opera scriptwriting.

Holders of Hong Kong identity cards aged 18 or above are eligible to enter the competition as individuals or on a group basis. The competition is divided into a preliminary contest and a final contest. Entrants for the preliminary contest will need to submit an entry form, together with the name of the play, a synopsis and an introduction for each scene and the major roles and a brief description of each main character, as well as the scripts of the first and second scenes. The finalists will be required to complete their full scripts within three months for final assessment by the adjudicating panel.

The adjudicators of the competition include Mr Law Hang-tong (Law Ka-ying), Mr Seto Yok (Loong Koon-tin), Ms Pun Kwai-mui (Ng May-ying), Ms Wong Shui-kwan (Wong Chiu-kwan), Mr Lau Kin-wing, Professor Lui Yu-hon, Mr Ip Sai-hung and representatives of the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) and the LCSD.

The awards of the competition include one for best script (the prize for the playwright(s) of the best script will be $80,000 in total) and three prizes for outstanding scripts at most (the prize for the playwright(s) of each outstanding script will be $50,000 in total). Other finalists whose scripts are considered by the adjudicators as satisfactory will receive $5,000 for each script.

The deadline for entry for the competition is 6pm on March 31 (Tuesday). Entrants are required to submit a completed entry form and other necessary documents in a sealed envelope to the HAB (13/F, West Wing, Central Government Offices, 2 Tim Mei Avenue, Tamar, Hong Kong). Entry guidelines and forms are now available at the foyers of the Ko Shan Theatre and the Ko Shan Theatre New Wing (77 Ko Shan Road, Hung Hom, Kowloon) as well as the foyer of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre (6 Waterloo Road, Kowloon), and can be downloaded from the HAB's website www.hab.gov.hk and the CODF's website www.coac-codf.org.hk.
