February concert to commemorate contributions of Dr Ng Wing-mui in nanyin tradition
*******************************************************

The Guangdong Music Series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will feature the concert "Nanyin in Guangdong Music ¡V The Legacy of Dr Ng Wing-mui" in February.

Dr Ng Wing-mui passed away in 2014. To pay tribute to her contributions to the Guangdong music tradition of South China, especially in regard to nanyin narrative singing, the concert will feature the famous star of Cantonese opera and nanyin artist, Yuen Siu-fai, and his two bravura pieces, "Burning Funerary Goods for His Love" and "King Chu Bidding Farewell to His Concubine". Leung Hoi-lee, an up-and-coming artist in the art of nanyin singing, will perform "The Lone Wild Goose" and "The Third Watch from Nocturnal Lament" in tribute to the late mentor, mother-figure and esteemed veteran artist.

The programme will also include the Guangdong music ensemble pieces "On Phoenix Terrace", "The Peacock in Its Full Glory", "The Flowing Water and the Drifting Clouds" and "Yang Cuixi".

Dr Ng Wing-mui (1925-2014), fondly known as Auntie Mui, was a folk musician. She made remarkable achievements in the indigenous Guangdong music tradition of South China. She was a famous figure in the music circles of Hong Kong and Macau under the stage name of Sai So when she was young. She was associated with many blind artists and was coached by virtuosi from Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macau, and therefore accumulated a consummate repertoire in the dishui nanyin style. Another memorable achievement of Auntie Mui was her virtuosity as an accompanist. With her expert knowledge as an accompanist and experience as a singer, she was able to reconstruct the female blind artist style of nanyin (shiniang qiang nanyin) and took her art to a higher plane, including gaining national-level acknowledgement in the last years of her life. This concert will commemorate her accolade as  "a treasure of the music circles of Hong Kong and Macau".

The concert "Nanyin in Guangdong Music ¡V The Legacy of Dr Ng Wing-mui" will be staged at 8pm on February 11 (Wednesday) at the Auditorium of the Ko Shan Theatre New Wing.
