************************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (January 15) the January 2015 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Marriage and Divorce Trends in Hong Kong, 1991 to 2013" and "Persons with Disabilities and Chronic Diseases in Hong Kong".

"Marriage and Divorce Trends in Hong Kong, 1991 to 2013"

This feature article provides an overview on the marriage and divorce trends in Hong Kong from 1991 to 2013.

Over the last two decades from 1991 to 2011, the proportions of never married population in both genders were on the rise. In 2011, 33.5% of males had never been married, slightly higher than that of females (excluding foreign domestic helpers), at 29.2%. Among those aged 45 or above, the extent of never marriage among men and women in Hong Kong was less prevalent than in Singapore, but more common than in the mainland of China. As for marriage, out of the 55 274 registered marriages in Hong Kong in 2013, marriages between Hong Kong residents took up around 52.2%, while Mainland-Hong Kong marriages took up another 38.0%. The latter was significantly higher than that in 1991. On the other hand, the number of divorces increased continuously, with the crude divorce rate at 3.1 per 1 000 population in 2013, nearly three times higher than that in 1991.

"Persons with Disabilities and Chronic Diseases in Hong Kong"

C&SD conducted a territory-wide survey on persons with disabilities and chronic diseases throughout 2013. The survey aimed to study the basic profiles of persons with disabilities and chronic diseases and to collect information about the carers of these persons. In 2013, there were 578 600 persons with disabilities (excluding persons with intellectual disability) and 1 375 200 persons with chronic diseases in Hong Kong.

This feature article gives a brief account of the major findings of the survey.
