New 3D dome-show reveals history of human flight (with photos)
*******************************************************

The latest 3D dome-show, "Dream to Fly 3D", will be screened from tomorrow (January 1) until June 29, 2015 at the Hong Kong Space Museum. The show reveals the history of man's efforts to fly, from the first generation of dreamers who imagined flying to today's deep-space explorers.

The first kites were made in China 2 500 years ago. They were used for leisure as well as for giving battle commands, but could only fly in the sky for a brief moment. In the 16th century Leonardo da Vinci observed and analysed the structures of birds and insects in the hope of constructing a flying machine. In 1783 the French Montgolfier brothers invented the first hot air balloon, carrying animals on-board the first flight, which managed to return to earth safely. In the 19th century, German inventor Otto Lilienthal took more than 2 000 short flights on gliders of his own construction, and became the first true test pilot. The Wright brothers then created a powered airplane using their invention of three-axis control, and it took off successfully in 1903.

After the Wright brothers' success, Louis Bleriot started working on his monoplane, which became the first aircraft manufactured commercially. Aviation technology advanced rapidly during the First and Second World Wars, thus hastening the development of passenger aviation. Today, planes are the safest and fastest way of traveling to faraway places. Even manned spaceflight is no longer a dream.

The 35-minute show will be screened daily at 2.40pm and 6.10pm at the museum's Stanley Ho Space Theatre. An additional show at 11.10am will be available on Sundays and public holidays. The museum closes at 5pm on Chinese New Year's Eve, and is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays) and the first two days of the Chinese New Year.

Tickets priced at $24 (front stalls) and $32 (stalls) are available at the Hong Kong Space Museum Box Office and URBTIX. Full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above and people with disabilities are eligible for a half-price concession.
