Multimedia performance "Landscape of Ozu" to link film and theatre experiences
***********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's "Multi-Media-Motion Series" will stage the multimedia performance "Landscape of Ozu" in January next year.

Local multimedia artist Adrian Yeung will direct the cinematic theatre production "Landscape of Ozu", focusing on the theme of family that renowned Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu spent a lifetime exploring. The show sets off from the perspective and aesthetics of Ozu, intertwining cinematic and theatrical approaches of storytelling to create an imaginary collaboration and dialogue with him.

The programme will be made up of two elements. The first element provides a biographic sketch of Ozu and the scenes and production process of his films. The second uses Ozu's film "Late Spring" as the blueprint: a play within a play takes place in a retro-style photography studio, and tells the story of a photographer father and his daughter who is getting married. The action will be filmed live, edited on the spot, and projected directly onto the screen. The work observes today's Hong Kong from the perspective of Ozu. The two components of film and theatre are woven together in the production, with the life of Ozu presented through a lively theatrical approach and the play within the play presented through the aesthetics of Ozu.

Adrian Yeung is a multimedia designer. Since 2007, he has participated in more than 40 productions, including drama, dance and music performances. In 2012, he began to explore new technologies in multimedia theatre production. His works include "Antonioni Conjecture", "Chris and Stephanie" and "(No)rwegian Wood".

Yeung invited local budding playwright Wu King-yeung to be the co-playwright for this production. The cast includes veteran actor Ng Wai-shek; Tsoi Wan-wa, a winner of the Award for Young Artist (Drama) in the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2013; and Yau Chung-wai, a winner of Best Actor in the 22nd Hong Kong Drama Awards. Albert Poon, who has served as an art director and costume designer for films such as "A Simple Life" and "The Way We Are", has been invited to take part in cross-boundary co-operation in theatre for the first time as a designer and is set to offer a new experience to audiences.

The cinematic theatre production "Landscape of Ozu", to be performed in Cantonese, will be staged at 8pm on January 23 and 24 (Friday and Saturday) and at 4pm on January 25 (Sunday) at the Multi-media Theatre of the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity.
