Police condemn protesters endangering public order and public safety
*******************************************************

Protesters gathered on various sections of roads, including Sai Yeung Choi Street South and Nathan Road, in Mong Kok from last night (December 24) to the small hours of today (December 25). They caused chaos and blocked the roads. Police had made repeated public announcements and displayed warning banners at scene to urge them to leave the scene but they refused to comply.  Police, with no other alternatives, used the minimum level of force and took resolute actions, including using pepper spray and batons to stop the unlawful acts, and to disperse and arrest the protesters involved.

Police arrested 10 men and two women, aged between 13 and 43, for "assaulting Police officer", "obstructing Police officer in execution of duty", "disorderly conduct in public place", "criminal damage" and "failing to produce proof of identity". Two police officers were injured in the operation.

Police condemned the acts of nuisances of the protesters which disregarded safety of others and seriously endangered public order. Police reiterate that resolute enforcement actions will be taken to preserve public order and safeguard public safety.

Police reiterate that we respect the public's freedoms of expression, speech and assembly. It is the policy of Police to facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and public order. Members of the public should comply with the laws of Hong Kong and maintain social order when expressing their views. They should refrain from conducting public meeting and procession by way of the so-called ¡§mobile occupation¡¨.
