***************************************

     The Government today (December 19) announced the appointment of 11 members to the Labour Advisory Board (LAB) for a term of two years starting in January.

     The appointed members include four employee representatives elected by registered employee unions, namely:

* Mr Leung Chau-ting
* Mr Ng Chau-pei
* Mr Chau Siu-chung
* Ms Wong Siu-han

     and five employer representatives nominated by major employer associations, namely:

* Mr Ho Sai-chu (representing the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce)
* Dr Kim Mak Kin-wah (representing the Employers' Federation of Hong Kong)
* Mr Stanley Lau Chin-ho (representing the Federation of Hong Kong Industries)
* Mr Irons Sze (representing the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong)
* Mr Emil Yu Chen-on (representing the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce)

     In addition, Ms Chan So-hing and Mr Cheung Sing-hung have been appointed on an ad personam basis as an employee member and employer member of LAB respectively.

     With the exception of Ms Wong Siu-han and Mr Cheung Sing-hung, all appointed members are incumbent members. Ms Wong Siu-han is the Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Trades Union Council, while Mr Cheung Sing-hung is the President of the Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce.

     The Commissioner for Labour, also Chairman of the LAB, Donald Tong, welcomed the above appointments. He looked forward to working closely with the LAB members in the new term to address issues of concern for both employees and employers.

     Mr Tong paid warm tribute to the two outgoing members, including employee representative Mr Lee Tak-ming as well as employer representative Mr Thomas Ho On-sing for their significant contributions to the LAB. "During their term of office, the two outgoing members proactively offered constructive advice on a wide range of important labour issues and committed themselves to improving employees' rights and benefits as well as fostering harmonious labour relations," he said.

     The LAB is a tripartite consultative body comprising representatives of employees and employers to advise the Commissioner for Labour on labour matters. The above LAB members will also serve in the Standard Working Hours Committee as ex-officio members by virtue of their membership of the LAB.

     Appointment to fill the vacancy arising from the passing away of an elected employee representative owing to illness will be made after a by-election for the new term of the LAB. Details will be announced in due course.
