Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, after attending a public event today (December 13) on funding approval for incinerator:

Reporter: What do you think about there are still a lot of resistance before the Shek Kwu Chau incinerator can get passed in the LegCo?

Secretary for the Environment: There are significant support from the public for the government to adopt the waste-to-energy technology in Hong Kong that can reduce landfill dependency. At the same time, it is a clean technology that can have clean operation during its treatment of waste. We are going to adopt the highest standard on earth, that is the European standard in terms of emission. On top of that, we would like to add the air filter that can also further reduce its NOx (nitrogen oxides) emission, which is a kind of air pollutant with concerns in Hong Kong. At the same time, during its design, planning and operation, we will set up a district liaison group embracing local people and experts, so that we can have high transparency of the operation to ease the concern of the locals. So I think it is an appropriate technology for Hong Kong, the earlier its completion, the better for Hong Kong.
