************************************************************

The Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene today (December 10) cancelled the licence of a food premises in Yuen Long and ordered another in the same district to suspend business for 14 days, as the operators repeatedly breached the Food Business Regulation (FBR) by illegally extending the business area.

A spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said, "The food premises subjected to cancellation of licence is 'Ching Kee', a general restaurant located at shop 4 on the ground floor of the Ho Sing Building at Yuen Long Town Lot 305 at Kam Fai Path; and the one facing suspension of licence is 'Hing Kee Spicy Rice Noodles', a light refreshment restaurant located at shop L22 on the ground floor of Grandeur Terrace at Tin Shui Wai Town Lot 28 in area 111 in Tin Shui Wai."

A total of 17 convictions for illegally extending the food business area were recorded against "Ching Kee" in October and a total fine of $164,000 was levied by the court. The contraventions also resulted in the cancellation of the licence in accordance with the department's demerit points system.

Two convictions for illegally extending the food business area were also recorded against "Hing Kee Spicy Rice Noodles" in October this year. A total fine of $18,000 was levied by the court and 30 demerit points were registered against the licensee. The contraventions resulted in the 14-day business suspension, running from today to December 23. The licensee of the food premises had a record of two convictions for the same offence in May last year and February this year. A total fine of $14,000 was levied and 30 demerit points were registered. The breaches led to business suspension for seven days in April this year.

The spokesman reminded licensees of food premises to comply with the FBR, or their licences could be suspended or cancelled.

Licensed food premises are required to exhibit a sign, at a conspicuous place near the main entrance, indicating that the premises have been licensed. A list of licensed food premises is available on the FEHD's website (www.fehd.gov.hk/english/licensing/licence-type.html).
