HK Public Libraries launches "Multimedia Information" mobile app
************************************************************

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has launched the "Multimedia Information" mobile app to complement the "My Library" app launched earlier. Users of the new app can access the vast amount of digitised content, including e-books, images and audio and video materials in the Multimedia Information System (MMIS) of the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) anywhere and anytime on their mobile devices. In addition, some of the e-books are downloadable for offline viewing.

     Patrons using the app can also view Library Resources Guides, the Library Newsletter, the Hong Kong Creative Writing Awards and winning works from the Children Literature Awards, as well as listen to subject talks organised by the HKPL. The public can now download the app from Google Play or the Apple App Store for free.

     The HKPL upgraded the MMIS last year to provide more than 2.5 million pages of digitised resources, including old newspapers, HKPL photo collections, maps, posters and e-books, and over 6,000 hours of digital audio and video materials. The system also provides a wide range of video-on-demand services so that readers may retrieve and enjoy audio-visual collections and children's multimedia resources of the Hong Kong Central Library at any branch library.

     Other than offering a convenient and interactive user interface, the MMIS provides the following features, which assist readers to explore and use the HKPL's rich digitised collections and multimedia materials:

(i) Easy search function: users can simply enter keywords or use the search tool of the system to browse information;

(ii) Content highlights: the system provides different content recommendations, including recently added items, the most popular items and the news in history; and

(iii) Better customer service: the public can make online bookings for the "Internet and Digital Service workstations" located at branch libraries.

     Members of the public can browse HKPL webpage at mmis.hkpl.gov.hk to learn more about MMIS services.
