Update on development of Community Green Stations (with photos)
********************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) announced today (November 30) the latest progress of two Community Green Station (CGS) projects. The tender exercise for the service contract for the Sha Tin CGS has been completed with Christian Family Service Centre appointed as the operator for three years, and open tenders are being invited for operating the service contract for the Eastern CGS.

An EPD spokesman said, "The Sha Tin CGS will be the first of its kind in Hong Kong. With the appointment of the operator and the construction works in progress, the CGS is expected to commence operation in early 2015. It will serve to strengthen environmental education and promote green living at the community level by providing logistics support for more residents to take part in waste reduction and recycling. The department has now moved on to the tendering of the Eastern CGS service contract."

The Sha Tin CGS will be located at the junction of On Ping Street and On Sum Street in Sha Tin. The EPD launched an open tender exercise in May this year, inviting non-profit-making organisations with relevant experience to bid for the service contract. Under the contract, the operator needs to proactively organise educational and promotional events for the public, and support local waste reduction and recycling work through liaising and co-operating with property management companies, schools and other organisations. The operator will organise a town hall meeting to enable locals to learn more about the Sha Tin CGS and to collect their views, so as to get prepared for providing dedicated services to the Sha Tin community as early as possible. Details of the town hall meeting will be announced later.

The Eastern CGS will be located at an area between Oi Shun Road and Hing Man Street in Sai Wan Ho, and its design has recently won a Merit Award in the Green Building Award 2014 organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council. Construction works are in progress and are anticipated to be completed early next year. It will start providing services once the tendering exercise is completed and the operator is appointed. Interested parties may obtain the tender documents from the Waste Management Policy Group, EPD, 8/F, AIA Tower, 183 Electric Road, North Point, Hong Kong, during office hours, and may refer to the EPD website at www.epd.gov.hk/epd for further information.      The EPD is progressively developing CGSs in other districts. Consultations with relevant District Councils on site selection have already been carried out for 11 CGS projects, namely those in Yuen Long, Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing, Tai Po, Sai Kung, Sham Shui Po, Tuen Mun and Wan Chai Districts in addition to the projects in Sha Tin and Eastern Districts. Consultations and site selections for the remaining seven CGS projects will continue.
