New exhibition "Construction•Transition @artsquare" opens at Salisbury Garden (with photos)

     An exhibition entitled "Construction‧Transition @artsquare" was unveiled today (November 29) at the Art Square at Salisbury Garden. The exhibition will display two sets of new installations until June 30 next year.

     Speaking at the opening ceremony today, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li, remarked that the Art Square is the first stage of the redevelopment project to enhance the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. She noted that the Hong Kong Museum of Art is planning large-scale renovation works. In connection with the construction projects nearby, the Art Square will gain a brand new look after the completion of works. The exhibition's title thus refers to construction and transition to echo what is happening in the area.

     Other officiating guests included the Chairman of the Art Museum Advisory Panel, Mr Vincent Lo; artist Dr Rocco Yim; Mr Hung Lam and Mr Eddy Yu from arts group CoLAB; Mrs Margaret Brooke and Mr Patrick Bruce from arts group Very Hong Kong; and the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Miss Eve Tam.

     Since its opening early this year, the Art Square has become a popular cultural point. As an extension of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Art Square is a location where art is brought from indoor galleries to an outdoor space. The Art Square is also located near the former site of the main station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway, which witnessed many historical moments in Hong Kong. The two large-scale installations, created with the theme of construction and transition, show the relationship of the Art Square with the surrounding buildings and the history of the area.

     "Bamboo Construct 2014", a huge installation by noted local architect and artist Dr Rocco Yim, combines the beauty of Chinese local culture and contemporary architecture, and fuses aesthetic and functional properties. Through the skilful use of bamboo, the artwork produces a visually dynamic and penetrable form.

     Another installation, "C.art", was created by local arts groups CoLAB and Very Hong Kong. Inspired by handcars used on railroads in the old days, the installation's specially designed mobile carts can be flexibly grouped into a bigger platform or scattered around Art Square, capturing the idea of mobility and transition.
