Key statistics on operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors in 2013

     According to the results of the 2013 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released today (November 28) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors' total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) amounted to $5,105.6 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 4.2% over 2012; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 6.1% compared with 2012 to $31.3 million in 2013.

     Operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the sectors altogether amounted to $4,702.4 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 3.7% over 2012; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 5.6% compared with 2012 to $28.8 million in 2013.

     Gross surplus of the sectors, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees, increased by 10.2% over 2012 to $403.2 billion in 2013; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $2.2 million in 2012 to $2.5 million in 2013. Gross surplus accounted for 7.9% of total receipts in 2013, which increased by 0.4 percentage point compared with 2012.

     Value added of the sectors, which is a measure of their total contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 4.3% over 2012 to $622.9 billion in 2013; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.8 million in 2013, which increased by 6.3% over 2012.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sectors comprised some 163 300 establishments and engaged about 1 136 000 persons, or an average of 7.0 persons per establishment, in 2013.

     In the import/export trade, total receipts amounted to $4,042.6 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $3,732.4 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $279.4 billion in 2012 to $310.3 billion in 2013, accounting for 7.7% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 2.9% over 2012 to $431.0 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $325.5 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $316.5 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $7.2 billion in 2012 to $9.0 billion in 2013, accounting for 2.8% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 8.2% over 2012 to $21.4 billion.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $570.3 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $513.6 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $52.7 billion in 2012 to $56.7 billion in 2013, accounting for 9.9% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 9.5% over 2012 to $97.3 billion.

     In the accommodation services sector which covered hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses and other establishments providing short term accommodation, total receipts amounted to $44.3 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $26.7 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $16.9 billion in 2012 to $17.6 billion in 2013, accounting for 39.8% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 6.8% over 2012 to $29.4 billion.

     In the food services sector which mainly covered restaurants, total receipts amounted to $122.8 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $113.2 billion in 2013. Gross surplus decreased from $9.6 billion in 2012 to $9.5 billion in 2013, accounting for 7.8% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 4.2% over 2012 to $43.9 billion.
