Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese 2014 showcases talents in literature (with photos)

     The prize ceremony for the Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese 2014 organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department was held today (November 27) at the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL). More than 1,500 entries were received on various topics in six categories and 48 winning works were recommended by the judges.

     Speaking at the ceremony, the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, pointed out that the HKPL endeavours to promote Chinese literature in Hong Kong. Apart from enriching the literature collections at libraries, the HKPL also organises different activities and competitions to encourage literary creation and cultivate public interest in Chinese literature.

     She said the Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese provided a platform for literature lovers to showcase and compete with their creativity and talents. This year's winners showed excellent writing skills and heartfelt sentiments in their works, and some of the works with local characteristics could easily strike a chord with readers.

     The winners are as follows:

Second Prize: Lee Choi-han
Third Prize: Wan Sin-ming

Children's Picture Story Category:
First Prize: Hwong Pui-ying
Second Prize: Lo Sze-hei
              Siu Ka-po
Third Prize: Chan Vi-fong

     Launched in 1979, the Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese has not only presented new writers with potential, but has also collected many outstanding works through its competitions. To tie in with this year's competition, the HKPL organised several talks and invited speakers to share their experiences in creative writing with regard to the six competition categories.

     The awarded works by the winners, first runners-up and second runners-up in the different categories will be published by the HKPL (in Chinese only) for public appreciation. Members of the public are also welcome to read the works through the HKPL Multimedia Information System (mmis.hkpl.gov.hk) online or at the public libraries.

     The winning works will be on display at the South Entrance Foyer of the HKCL from tomorrow (November 28) to December 18. The judges' comments on the entries in the final adjudication will be consolidated into an Adjudication Summary Booklet (in Chinese only), which will be available at the Reference Libraries at the HKCL, City Hall Public Library, Kowloon Public Library, Tsuen Wan Public Library, Sha Tin Public Library, Tuen Mun Public Library and Ping Shan Tin Shui Wai Public Library for public reference.
