Road Safety Council 41st Anniversary Ceremony cum Elderly Road Safety Campaign 2014

     The Road Safety Council 41st Anniversary Ceremony cum Elderly Road Safety Campaign 2014 was held by the Road Safety Council at Discovery Park Sky Dome Atrium in Tsuen Wan this afternoon (November 22).

     Speaking at the Ceremony, the Chairman of the Road Safety Council and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Wong Chi-hung, said that the Road Safety Council was established in 1973 to co-ordinate road safety activities in Hong Kong. With the support of two sub-committees, namely the Road Safety Campaign Committee and the Road Safety Research Committee and one working group, the Council co-ordinates all road safety activities in Hong Kong.

     These range from involving the different departments concerned, promoting education, publicity and community initiatives and studying road engineering solutions to dealing with traffic management, legislation and law enforcement. In 2013, the total number of fatal traffic accidents was 130, which was the lowest number of fatal road traffic accidents since 1955.

     Mr Wong thanked the members of the Council and the partners of the society for their contributions and support. He said he hoped that concerted efforts will be made continuously so as to take a step closer to the vision of "Zero accidents on the road, Hong Kong's goal".

     Other officiating guests included the Chairman of Road Safety Research Committee, Mr David To and the Chairman of Road Safety Campaign Committee, Dr Eric Cheng.
