Research Grants Council public lecture on Social Considerations for Urban Renewal and Urban Planning to be held on November 23

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

     The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present its fourth public lecture this year, under the theme of "Social Considerations for Urban Renewal and Urban Planning", on November 23 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Central Library.

     The RGC has invited the Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong, Professor Rebecca Chiu, to share her research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: G/F Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library
Language: Cantonese
Admission is free on a first-come, first-served
basis.

     Professor Chiu will give a talk entitled "Social Sustainability of Gated Communities in a High Density City: the Case of Hong Kong", which will evaluate social sustainability issues in the planning and use of Hong Kong's gated and semi-gated housing estates. The talk will also compare and explain the social sustainability performance of different housing estate types with reference to the socio-political and institutional contexts of housing estate construction.

     Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited by the RGC to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim at arousing public interest in local research development.
