Dance performances to celebrate French writer Marguerite Duras centenary
*********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the multimedia performance "Duras Project: Moderato Cantabile/C'est Tout" in December to commemorate the centenary of the birth of French writer Marguerite Duras.

Duras is famous for her use of an avant-garde writing style in her explorations of life and death, love and sex, and historical issues. She also holds an important place in Hong Kong cultural circles that came to favour modernism after the 1980s.

"Duras Project: Moderato Cantabile/C'est Tout" is inspired by her magnum opus, "Moderato Cantabile" (1958), and the posthumous "C'est Tout" (1995). The performances will be held at a site rich in Hong Kong history - the Cattle Depot Theatre in To Kwa Wan focusing on two of Duras' favourite themes: love and death.

Duras was born in 1914 in Vietnam to French parents. Her father passed away when she was still young. Her family lived on her mother¡¦s meagre wages as a teacher, but with a disastrous error of investment things took an even worse turn. The incident was recounted in her first writing success, "Un barrage contre le Pacifique" (1950). In 1984, her novel "L'amante" won the Le Prix Goncourt, which rivals the Nobel Prize in France. During her life she wrote more than 40 novels and over 10 film scripts, playing an active role in films and the theatre. She also directed several movies including "India Song" and "Les Enfants".

"Duras Project: Moderato Cantabile/C'est Tout"  will be staged at 8pm on December 12 to 14 (Friday to Sunday), and at 3pm on December 13 and 14(Saturday and Sunday) at the Cattle Depot's On and On Theatre. Tickets priced at $220 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
