Cases arising from illegal occupation

     Police today (November 8) presented information of cases which occurred the day before arising from the illegal occupation.

     The illegal occupation has lasted for more than a month.  There are still daily occurrence of crimes in the illegally occupied areas.  At 4am this morning, a 26-year-old man reported to Police that his mobile phone valued at $8,000 was stolen while he was sleeping underneath a footbridge near 16 to 18 Harcourt Road, Central. The ¡§Theft¡¨ case is now being investigated by Central District Investigation Team.

     A Police spokesman pointed out that more and more notorious characters are present in the illegally occupied areas.  Criminals can easily take advantage of the deteriorating situation.  He reminded the public to take care of their personal properties and that youngsters should be vigilant of the risk of being lured to take part in illegal activities.

     On cyber crime, Police noted that there were persons inciting others on the social media platforms to participate in illegal assembly, cause obstruction and block the access to a place in Central on a specified date.  Upon investigation, the  Technology Crime Division of the Commercial Crime Bureau arrested a 25-year-old man, surnamed ¡§Yau¡¨, at about 7.45pm last evening in Mong Kok.  The case has now been classified as ¡§Access to Computer with Criminal and Dishonest Intent¡¨.

     Since September 26, Police have arrested 14 persons, including 11 males and 3 females, aged 13 to 39, for the offences of ¡§Access to Computer with Criminal and Dishonest Intent¡¨ and ¡§Criminal Intimidation¡¨.

     Police remind members of the public that the Internet environment is not a lawless virtual world.  Illegal acts committed in the cyber world will be sanctioned by laws and the offenders will have to shoulder the criminal liability.  The majority of the laws of Hong Kong are equally applicable to the cyber world.  The public should refrain from committing unlawful acts on the Internet. Inciting others to commit criminal acts on the Internet is likewise illegal. Police will collect evidence, conduct follow up investigation and make arrest when there is sufficient evidence.

     At around 6pm yesterday (November 7), a male police constable, on his way to Kwai Chung Police Station to report duty, was assaulted by a man near the Kwai Fong MTR Station.  He sustained injuries to his head, face and hands.  After uttering intimidating remarks, the assailant fled. The police constable gave chase but in vain.  He was sent to hospital where he was treated and discharged.  The case is now classified as ¡§Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm¡¨ under the investigation by Kwai Tsing District Crime Squad.

     The Police spokesman stated that the police constable had been deployed to the illegally occupied areas in Mong Kok and Admiralty for duty.  Police are investigating whether the motive involved in the case is related to the illegal occupation.

     Police condemn such violent acts, stressing that Police will not tolerate any violence. Police will take decisive enforcement actions against illegal acts in a fair and impartial manner regardless of the background of any person involved.
